5 Easy Spells for the Beginner Witch: Protection, Love, Success, Healing, and Intuition

Spellcasting—Why So Difficult?

New to the craft? Maybe you want to try a spell but don’t know where to start? Spellcasting can be as easy or as difficult as you want it to be. It can be simple or complex. It can be mental or emotional or both. It can also be physical and spiritual. It can include as many or as little ingredients and tools as you’d like. The options are endless and are all up to you. You can find many spells for free online or you can write your own.

What is a spell, exactly? A spell is similar to a prayer, but with focused intention and harnessed energy. Spells can be used for personal gain, as we are in control of our own lives and where we go in life. They should not be used to gain control over others, however. But ultimately morals are at the behest of the spellcaster, and so the individual will deal with the consequences.

For those who feel the need to have a spell already written for you, and one that is easy to follow and perform, check out the five easy spells below to help get you started. Feel free to use any or all of them and tailor them to your needs!

Protection Spell: Circle of Salt

One of the easiest and most useful spells is one for protection. I call this the circle of protection, and it is also helpful in learning how to formally “cast a circle” before any spells, rituals or workings of any kind. This spell works to protect your home and everyone in it from spiritual or even physical invasion (but to be safe from physical threats, don’t forget to lock up and use an alarm if necessary!) It also works to diffuse negative energies from entering your space.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • salt
  • concentration
  • Full Moon

Spell Steps:

  1. When you have your salt ready, go outside of your home preferably on a Full Moon, and start at your front door.
  2. Move in a clockwise motion (we call this deosil), from your front door around your house, and slowly sprinkle salt around the perimeter of your home. Take care not to pour salt on any ornamental plants and avoid grass as much as possible.
  3. While you are doing this, state out loud “pure salt protect this home and all who reside here. Keep out those who seek to harm, protect us from negativity, anger, and fear.” You’ll also want to actively visualize a circle of protection around your home as you do this.
  4. Repeat this phrase and continue to circle the house in salt until you end up where you started – at the front door.
  5. Next, say out loud “this house is protected from negative energies and forces. So mote it be.”

Love Spell: Herbal Bath of Love

What do most people crave most in their lives? LOVE. Some people are so desperate that they’ll come to witchcraft just so they can learn how to do a love spell. This is not the best of intentions to cast a spell, as often these types can backfire in a way the caster doesn’t expect or even want! However, if you are new to the craft and simply want to be able to draw love into your life (rather than cast a spell over an individual who is unexpecting and unwilling), try this easy and relaxing (and moral) love spell.

What you’ll need:

  • a quiet and undisturbed time
  • Lavender and/or rose petals
  • candle(s) and candle holder/plate
  • relaxing music (helpful but not required)

Spell Steps:

  1. Set the mood by drawing a hot bath and adding a bit of the herbs of your choice directly to the bath or inside of a bath sachet. Light a candle and set in a safe place. Turn on relaxing music.
  2. Enter the bathtub and lay back. Breathe deeply and slowly. Visualize all of your worries and cares melting off of you.
  3. Let the music and the bath be the only two things that concern you in this moment.
  4. When you’re ready, visualize a sphere of white light encircling you in the tub. This is your cast circle. At this point, you can also invite your goddess into the circle.
  5. Next, visualize the type of love you are looking for in your life. Visualize yourself laughing and playing and flirting with your dream man or woman.
  6. Once you’ve held the vision of your dream love in your head for a few minutes, say these words or similar: “I draw to me a pure and sweet love. One that will benefit me and my soul’s journey. To the benefit of all and to harm none.”
  7. Repeat this phrase at least 3 times but up to thirteen times. When complete, state “so mote it be.”
  8. You may stay in the bath as long as you’d like. Release the circle when you are ready by visualizing the sphere fading and the energy from within moving into space to perform the work that is required to draw love to you.
  9. After your herbal bath of love, continue to intermittently visualize your dream love’s image and tell yourself and the universe “I am worthy and ready for a pure and true love in my life.”

Success Spell: Candle of Power

Looking for a little more success in an area of your life? Time to try a little success magick through the use of a simple and effective candle spell. Candle spells are one of the most popular kinds of spells because they are diverse and not fussy. You can easily personalize a candle spell by using various candle colors, sizes, shapes; also by carving or painting special symbols on the candle; and by dressing the candle in special oils and herbs of your choice. Try this Candle of Power spell and watch your success increase!

What You’ll Need:

  • yellow votive candle
  • candle holder or plate
  • matches or lighter
  • a knife or pin (for carving)
  • New, Waxing, or Full Moon

Spell Steps:

  1. Gather your ingredients.
  2. Cast a circle (you can google how to easily do this if you don’t know how, or see the herbal bath of love spell above – step #4).
  3. Using your pin or knife, carefully carve a symbol of success onto the sides of your candle. This can be the money sign, a rune of your choice (research online ahead of time), or any type of symbol you feel represents success.
  4. Light your candle.
  5. Focus on the flame of the candle. Visualize yourself with success in whatever arena of life you desire. See yourself with your mind’s eye in this successful position. Believe it.
  6. Watch the flame dance and flicker for as long as you’d like.
  7. Release your circle, but allow the candle to continue burning until it has burned itself out (be sure to stay in the room with the candle so it doesn’t light anything on fire. Safety first!)
  8. Once the candle is burned out and the wax has cooled, keep the wax in a bag or container of some kind in a safe place.
  9. After your spell and as often as you remember, tell yourself and the universe “I am successful. I am worthy. I am powerful.”

Health Spell: Healing Hands

For this spell, you are focusing on your health and wellbeing by tapping into the Universe’s healing powers. There are many versions of this kind of healing practice all over the world, one you may have heard of is reiki (a Japanese technique for relaxation and stress reduction also used to promote healing). This is a spell that requires no tools and little steps. BUT it is just as effective as any other.

What You’ll Need:

  • an open heart and mind
  • your hands

Spell Steps:

  1. Clear your mind from worries and concerns. Ask that ONLY the highest beings of the universe aid you in this process.
  2. Place both of your hands on your head, chest, stomach or wherever you feel called to place them.
  3. Imagine the pure, loving energy of the Universe entering your crown chakra and flowing through your body and down through your arms and into your hands.
  4. Then visualize the energy flowing freely from your hands and into your body where you need healing most.
  5. Allow the energy to flow for as long as you feel is necessary.

No circle needs to be cast for this process and you can use it any time! This is similar to reiki and other healing hands practices used the world over. Think about it like this, what is the first thing we do when we have an injury somewhere on our body? We grab for it with our hands! Ever wonder why that is? It is possible we do this because of an unconscious awareness that our hands can provide healing energy.

Intuition Spell: Increase My Dreams Sachet

Many people would like to increase their intuition and open their third eye. One way of doing this is by increasing the amount and quality of the dreams you are having at night. Some say a direct line of communication with the Universe/Spirit occurs in our dreams, as well as the ability for us to travel to other planes of existence and tap into our akashic records. This spell will serve to increase your amount of dreams, as well as the quality of the dreams you are having.

What You’ll Need:

  • a small muslin or cotton bag with drawstring (you can create your own with a square piece of fabric and string/yarn if you don’t have a bag)
  • loose-leaf dry herbs: mugwort, wormwood, lavender, and rosemary (if you only have access to one of these, use mugwort)
  • a journal or notebook to write down your dreams

Spell Steps:

  1. Gather your ingredients.
  2. Cast your circle.
  3. Open your small bag and place a pinch of mugwort into the bag. While doing this, state these words or some similar: “with these herbs, I increase my dreams and therefore my intuition. I open my third eye.”
  4. Repeat step 3 for each herb you place into your dream bag.
  5. Tie up the bag and hold it in the palms of your hands. Close your eyes and imagine your third eye opening.
  6. When you feel it is time, state “so mote it be”.
  7. Release your circle.
  8. Place this dream sachet beneath your pillow, in your pillowcase, or under your mattress beneath where your head lays.
  9. When your dreams start coming freely, write them down in your journal. This helps in dream recall and will give you a reference to study later.

Why Didn’t My Spell Work?

There are many reasons why your spell might not manifest. The first thing you need to do is think about what state of mind you were in while you cast the spell. If your emotions or state of mind didn’t match your intentions, this could be one reason why your spell didn’t come to fruition. For example, if you were casting a spell for drawing love into your life but you were obsessing over an ex-lover, you might have mentally blocked the spell from manifesting. Your vibrations didn’t match your intention.

Second, you need to think about whether you raised enough energy for the spell to manifest. What I mean by this is, did you visualize and focus on your intention during the spell or were you lazy? For instance, performing the Candle of Power spell without ever visualizing yourself as successful could lead to absolutely nothing happening in your life. By raising energy using your visualization abilities, thinking hard about what you want, and also performing each task with intention, your spell will manifest easier than if you put low energy and thought into it.

Last but not least, if you’re not putting the effort into your daily life, on a physical level, your spell will not come to fruition. This means if you’re casting a spell for success, but you’re not actually getting off the couch, the universe will not grant your request. You’ve cast a spell on the spiritual plane, but you must follow up with your intentions on the physical plane. Reciprocation is key.

5 Awesome Ways To Cast Spells Without Any Tools or Ingredients

Growing up was a little different in my family. We were nomadic for the majority of my childhood, moving every 6-8 months or so, hopping from place to place following my parents work. We changed cities and states so often I honestly can’t recall all of the places I’ve lived!

Of course, as a kid moving that much is hard. Leaving and re-making friends is tough, changing everything you know is scary and don’t even get me started on the kind of kinks the nomad life can throw into a kids education! All of the craziness aside, I did have some really amazing experiences along the way. Unlike most people I’ve met, I was best friends with my brother, we were practically inseparable as kids. We would go on long family camping trips and disappear up into the mountains (my favorite part of any summer), my brother and I would have more fun on those trips pretending to be pirates with sticks for swords than we ever had at home.

That kind of improvisation was a staple for us growing up. When you move constantly you learn to strip down to the bare essentials, you don’t WANT a lot of stuff because you know that in 3 or 4 months you’re just going to have to pack it all up again and lug it with you to the next place. After years of moving you end up with fairly scant belongings and you get REALLY good improvising and learning to make do with what you have.

Now, as an adult, I’m still a pretty on-the-go kind of person. I’ve never gone more than a year without moving (old habits die hard) and now I’m living on the road for the second time. If my upbringing didn’t turn me into an expert minimalist, my adult life certainly has and that knack for making do with less has definitely influenced how I practice witchcraft.

If I collect every witchcraft related item that I own together it all fits into one small basket, with room to spare. More often than not my spells are whispered incantations, hastily drawn sigils or entirely performed in my head. I have spent months of my life thinking I was a bad witch because I never did “real” spells! What I didn’t realize back then was that I WAS doing real spells and I was doing them VERY well because I was managing to produce powerful magical results with NO tools or ingredients.

1. Sigils

Ok, so sigils technically require you to have something to write with and something to write on BUT you can find pens just about anywhere (the bank, your waitress, a friend, etc.) and if no paper is available I know plenty of us just resort to scribbling them on our arms or receipts so I still think it counts.

Sigils are an amazing way to cast spells quickly and easily with very little fuss. As Frater U.D. puts it in Practical Sigil Magic , “The advantages of this method… are obvious. It is temptingly easy, and with only a little practice it may be performed ay any time and at any place.”

Once you’ve designed a sigil you can keep the design and reuse it as many times as you need, many witches find that they end up with a repertoire of tried and true sigils that they either keep readily available to copy and use from their phones or from memory.

If you’re not too familiar with sigil crafting yet, I would highly recommend checking out Practical Sigil Magic! It’s my go-to resource for all things sigil crafting and it’s an excellent place to both begin and expand an effective sigil practice.

2. Written & Spoken Spells

Written and spoken spells are a favorite of mine. They’re quick, you can improvise them on the fly and there are so many was to utilize them! A lot of people feel like incantations have to be long and they have to rhyme and while I do love a good rhyming incantation in my rituals you definitely DON’T have to rhyme to make your spells effective. Simply jotting down or whispering your intention can be incredibly effective.

You could also empower your words in conversation. Going to a job interview? Pull a little sweetening magic into your words. Talking with a friend about your dreams? Add some intent behind your words so that your dreams will quicken into reality.

My main tip for this form of spellwork is to never phrase these spells in the negative. Because these spells are so freeform it can be easy to get your messages mixed and if you focus on what you don’t want you might just get a whole lot more of the very thing you’re trying to get rid of. Instead focus your words on what you DO want!

3. Imagination

Any kind of imaginative exercise can be turned into a spell and you don’t have to limit yourself to simple visualization. I know plenty of witches who can’t or don’t like to visualize so if visualization isn’t your thing, don’t sweat it! You could also imagine sounds, sensations, colors, concepts or anything else that you feel will bring about the result you desire.

When casting spells this way it’s always best to get as specific as possible. The more thought and effort you pour into your imaginative spell the more power you give it and the better the result will be.

4. Emotionally Driven Spells

This is the most common kind of “accidental” magic and the same kind of magic behind the evil eye! To use it, you harness the power of your emotions to bring your intent into being.

Obviously there are a few caveats to this type of spell casting, the first is that you have to be feeling some pretty strong emotions to make it work. If you want to cast a spell for happiness but you don’t feel happy you won’t get far. Likewise if you’re trying to hex someone but you feel pretty ambivalent about it the spell will likely be a flop.

The second caveat is that this is a highly volatile type of magic, you won’t have quite as much control over the strength of the spell or how the results are achieved. If you’re not worried about the spell being overzealous or unpredictable then this is a great way to cast spells when you’re in the heat of the moment.

5. Enchanting

Enchanting is essentially just turning normal things into magical things. Anything can be enchanted for any purpose which makes this a highly versatile form of magic. There are many ways to do this but the simplest method is to program your item by channeling your intent into it and then charging the item when the spell is needed by feeding it energy from yourself or some other source.

Enchanting items works best if the item holds some relation in your mind to the intent you wish it to hold. A pen or pencil for sweetening words. A compact mirror for beauty. A compass for travel spells. The relation doesn’t have to be direct though, if you have personal associations that are perhaps stronger than traditional associations that an object might hold don’t be afraid to experiment.

See? You definitely don’t need a bunch of fancy tools, ingredients or gadgets to be a witch! You can practice magic any time, anywhere, regardless of what you have on hand. You just have to get creative!

Wiccan Love Spells

So what exactly makes Wiccan love spells different from other kinds of love spells? To be honest, I’m sure most people who are new to the art of witchcraft are just confusing the terms “witch” and “Wiccan”.

Wiccans follow a particular religion, though you don’t need to be a Wiccan to practice witchcraft. I won’t get into all the details just now, but the bottom line is that Wiccan love spells are pretty much like any other love spells.

Seeds of Love

You may not be actually planting these seeds in the dirt, but this charm can help love to blossom. Cutesy enough for you? Well, this is a great love spell even if you don’t like my plant metaphors. You’ll need to get these items together:

• 9 sunflower seeds
• 9 dried beans
• 9 dry kernels of corn
• 9 grains of barley
• 9 dry chamomile buds
• 9 whole cloves
• Rose oil
• Glass bottle with stopper
• Red ribbon

You need to choose a bottle that will hold all the seeds but won’t have too much empty space at the top either. This Wiccan love spell should be performed on the night of the new moon.

Drop each of the seeds into the bottle, one by one. Yes, it’s a bit tedious but that’s how it’s done. As you do so, repeat the following lines:

Seeds and spices, give me power
Time to make my love life flower
As the moon grows in the sky
This charm will make my wishes fly

When the bottle is filled, add 9 drops of rose oil to the top and stopper it up. Don’t shake, you need to let the oil work its way down from the top. Tie the red ribbon in a bow around the bottle and place it somewhere quiet where it won’t be disturbed. By the full moon, you should see some action in the love department.

Passion on Your Doorstep

The use of hot pepper in love spells is kind of a Voodoo tradition, but can be pretty successful in any kind of spellwork. Get your ingredients together:

• 3 drops hot pepper sauce
• 3 cups of rainwater
• Dried rosemary
• Black peppercorns
• Dried orris root pieces
• 3 drops Lavender oil

You don’t need to be too precise with the herbs. Two or three pinches of each would be fine, just try to use the same amount for all the herbs. Stir everything together in a bowl, while you concentrate on drawing love and passion into your life.

Using your fingers, sprinkle the mixture around your front doorstep. Don’t just pour it all out in one spot. Wash your hands well afterward, and wait for love to come knocking at your door.

Yes, only two spells on this page. There are a couple more Wiccan love spells that I can suggest though.

You can keep on reading for some examples of good white magic love spells or just more free love spells online. If you find your magick doesn’t work the first time, don’t give up. It can take practice to really master the art of witchcraft.
